History of the Barrington Area Council of Governments
BACOG has a rich history of environmental planning and regional cooperative initiatives spanning over 40 years. BACOG met for the first time April 25, 1970 under the 1969 Intergovernmental Relations Act that provided the legal basis for councils of government. The unique and autonomous villages of Barrington, Barrington Hills, Deer Park, North Barrington, South Barrington and Tower Lakes recognized the need for cooperation to respond to increasing development pressures like the Centex Development in South Barrington and to protect the quality of life for residents in the Barrington Area. BACOG initiatives in environmentalism, planning, and intergovernmental cooperation are represented in the history told by the newsletters below. For a more comprehensive BACOG history view Barbara L. Benson's "A History of the Barrington Area Council of Governments" and Don Klein's "Barrington Local History".
