| How adopting Digital Data Standards helps local government:
- Data standards protect your investment. Collecting data in
its native digital format allows you to convert, update, or otherwise
incorporate that data into other projects and for other municipal
projects. Regardless of the available technology resources in a
village or township, it is important to collect the data so that it may
be used or incorporated in the future, or for use in other contracted
services.
- Data standards are a widely used in both public and private organizations that work with digital data. Nationally,
government on every level are adopting standards with varying degrees
of specificity for digital data. BACOG's uniform standards ensure basic
requirements for locational accuracy, content, and delivery are met
without putting undue burden on private firms, a number of which have
already adopted their own stricter set of standards for organizational
purposes.
- Officials and staff can use this data for better decision-making and service. The
ability to overlay digital information with existing local datasets
allows officials to effective analyze and communicate impacts of
decisions. Staff who have the technology and training to view this
data are also able to response quickly and effectively to questions
from residents, businesses, and contractors at the point of service.

Village and Townships are strictly
required to obtain an MOU from contractors and developers requesting
data for a goverment project.
The MOU must be
obtained before data is shared as it requires them to only use the data
for governmental purposes, under the terms of the project, and requires
it is disclaimed and documented appropriately.

| Through
the Consortium member municipalities and townships may purchase valuable GIS
services from BACOG at a cost-effective staff rate for projects specific to
their community. Hours are reserved at the beginning of the BACOG Fiscal Year (July 1st)
GIS services offer our members affordability, familiarity, and flexibility: Services are bought at staff hourly rates
instead of consultant rates. As many or
few hours as needed may be purchased from the consortium. GIS staff has high level technical skills as well as practice
with regional resources and data and work is performed locally or remotely depending on resources
and local desires.
The
full-time GIS Analyst position dedicates 60% of its time to regional BACOG
projects and 40% of its time to consortium needs. Only members
who opt-in to the consortium pay for the additional 40% of the GIS Analyst
position.
