PROFILE OF THE BARRINGTON AREA (Zip Code 60010): 1980-2000
In 2000, the population of the Barrington area (zip code 60010) increased 6.6% from 1990, rising from 37,356 to 39,819, slower than in the 1980s, when the area grew by 34%.
Among area communities, the largest population growth from 1990-2000 was seen by North Barrington, which increased its population by 63.3%. North Barrington was followed by South Barrington (+28%) and Lake Barrington (+23.4%). Two area communities - Barrington Hills and Tower Lakes - suffered from slight population losses during the 1990s.
Although the area continues to be predominantly white, the proportion of nonwhites rose from 3.7% in 1990 to 6.5% in 2000. The number of blacks increased from 193 to 235, while Asians went from 1,095 to 1,804. Persons of Hispanic origin rose from 410 to 778. Asians recorded a very high growth rate during the decade - increasing by 64.7%.
After dropping from 1980 to 1990, the proportion of children in the Barrington area increased from 27.5% of the total population in 1990 to 28.5% in 2000. The number of individuals aged 18-44 dropped by 21.1% from 14,423 in 1990 to 11,376 in 2000. The number aged 45-64 and 65+ jumped dramatically - increasing by 34.2% and 39.8% respectively.
Median age rose by 4.3 years during the decade - from 37.0 years in 1990 to 41.3 years in 2000. In 1980, the median age stood at 33.6 years. The area is far older than the U.S., which has a 2000 median age of 35.3 years.· In 2000, there were 96.3 males for every 100 females. This was slightly lower than 1990, when the ratio was 97.1.
Of the 14,029 households in the Barrington area, 11,523 (82.1%) are family households. Since 1980, the proportion of traditional two-parent families has declined from 44.1% in 1980 to 40.2% in 1990 and then to 36% in 2000. Single female parents comprise just 2.9% of households, with less than one percent single male parent. Although declining, the Barrington area still has a much higher proportion of married-couple with children households than the United States (26.3%).
The average household size decreased from 2.94 in 1990 to 2.84 in 2000. Average family size fell also, from 3.24 in 1990 to 3.18 in 2000.
The percentage of owner-occupied housing units remained about the same from 1990 (90.2%) to 2000 (91.8%). While nine of ten housing units in the Barrington area are owner-occupied, just 64.2% are owned nationally.
The estimated average home value rose from $281,700 to $306,482 during the 1990s, while average monthly rent increased from $629 per month to $678. Figures for 2000 are CACI estimates.
The level of college graduates in 1990 for the Barrington area stood at a very high 51.6% , up from 40.7% in 1980. Educational attainment data for 2000 is not yet available.
Median household income for the Barrington area rose from $79,949 in 1990 to an estimated $109,336 in 2000.
Poverty in the Barrington area was very low in 1990 - just 1.8% of all persons were below poverty, declining from 2.4% in 1980. Census 2000 poverty data is not yet available.
