BACOG Private Well Water Testing Program

Read the NEW BACOG Water Testing Program Brochure!  Click the image below.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that all homes with private wells test their water for contaminants annually.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates only public water systems, so it is up to homeowners to ensure their private well drinking water is safe for consumption.

BACOG offers semi-annual Well Water Testing Programs, whereby residents of the BACOG region may purchase test kits and bring their water samples to a central collection point in the Village of Barrington.  Check this site or call the BACOG office for the next scheduled Well Water Testing Program date, or sign up to receive notification of BACOG's next testing program on our short form.  You also may have your water tested at county facilities at any time by contacting Lake and McHenry Health Departments.

Private Water Supply

Public Water Supply

The first BACOG Well Water Testing Program was held in November 2010 and over 200 households tested their private well water for bacteria and nitrates.  Approximately 16% of samples tested positive for bacteria; none tested positive for nitrates.

The second Well Water Testing Program was held during National Groundwater Awareness Week in March 2011, and nearly 400 residents tested their well water.  Approximately 6% of samples tested positive for bacteria and again, none tested positive for nitrates.

BACOG will host its next scheduled water testing event on March 13, 2012.  Please click here for details.

Residents on public water supply systems do not need to test their water quality.  Public suppliers are required by the IEPA to test for a broad range of contaminants on a regularly scheduled basis.  These findings are summarized and distributed to residents, as required by law, in an annual water quality report.
